South Carolina, January 20, 1896, "My dear Ellie," signed "E.V.B.", regarding weather, illnesses, people in Athens; undated,
to Stern Brothers, signed E. B. Tschudi, ordering various items of clothing from catalog. Miscellaneous items included are
a receipted bill to Miss E. B. Tschudi from the Decorative Art Society (dated March 7, 1890), pressed flower labeled "From
Miss Winnie Davis, Nov. 1887," advertisement and brochure entitled The Churchman. Items related to Emmanuel Church Sunday
School and Union Baptist Institute are now located in Vertical Files.

Two letters from Union surgeon William C. Towle written to his wife. First letter dates February 26, 1865 and details Towle's
time in Savannah with the army and the newly free enslaved people he has hired since arriving. "I am living well, I pay a
colored woman three dollars a month to cook for me, I have a man to take care of my horses and another to wait upon me..."
Second letter dates May 29, 1865 and details his time in Augusta, seeing Jeff Davis pass through the town, and his knowledge
of newly emancipated enslaved people who are told to "not consider the word Freedom as meaning Freedom from labor." Towle
ends his second letter by promising to send "a negro girl" to his wife.

and cannonadings, falsified reports in Southern newspapers, diatribes towards leaders of the Confederacy especially Howell
Cobb and Jefferson Davis, the fall of towns such as Tunnel Hill, Dalton, and Resaca (Ga.), and the evacuation of Atlanta.

The collection consists of one bound manuscript compiled by Charles Colcock Jones, Jr. entitled "Letter of General Robert
E. Lee tendering to the President of the Confederate States his resignation of the command of the Army of Northern Virginia:
with explanatory remarks by Charles C. Jones, Jr." Thus, the main body of the manuscript is Jones' transcription of Lee's
famous letter. More importantly, however, the volume has tipped in six prints of Lee, six of Jefferson Davis, two of General
George Meade, and one each of Generals P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, A.P. Hill, T.J. Jackson, Joseph E. Johnston, John
H. Morgan, and J.E.B. Stuart. Views included are two of the Battle of Gettysburg, the Capitol at Richmond, and two unusual
views of Richmond, as well as a folding map. In addition three letters are tipped in: 1. opposite page 4. This letter from
General G. E. Pickett to General Braxton Bragg, dated 26 April 1864, one page, discusses military matters preparatory to the
Battle of the Crater and as such is historically important. 2. opposite page 6. Note signed by Robert E. Lee and addressed
to President Davis informing him the the "Florida Brigade cannot be spared from the army." 3. opposite page 11. Note signed
by Davis and dated 25 August 1863 referring to the above. Apparently both 2 and 3 are endorsements from the same original
piece and separated by Jones for inclusion in this volume. The volume also has clippings of Jones' "A Piece of Secret History"
(Scribner's Magazine, February 1876) and a review of this article (The Cycle, 29 January 1876).

The papers of Gustavus Woodson Smith, 1858-1863, include correspondence with CSA President Jefferson Davis, often quarreling
about army administration and strategy, appointment of staff, and his subsequent resignation as Major General. There is one
letter to his wife Lucretia from New Kent County, Virginia, three reports with revisions on engagements at Eltham Landing
and the Battle of Seven Pines or Fair Oaks during the Peninsular Campaign in Virginia, and operations of the Georgia Militia
near Atlanta during the 1864 Atlanta Campaign. Also included is an original battlefield map showing Smith's route through
Virginia in the vicinity of Fairfax Court House (1861).
